The year is 1998 and I come from an average family with 4 kids. I have three daughters and one son. I was recently hired by a computer manufacturing company in a small city called West Port in Wisconsin. The company just gave me $10,000 to cover moving expenses and 2 weeks in a Holiday Inn hotel. So we moved and had just arrived. My life was already hell and I was about to give it all up until we found a unusual house. It all started when my wife and I went house hunting and found a few houses. After numerous houses, we found nothing that we liked. Then, one day, we came across a old man selling his house for about $25,000. We thought it was a average house until we got there. What was unusual was that he specifically named us when he wanted to sell the house and would sell to nobody else. From the outside, we know that there was something strange about the house, but nothing prepared us for what we were about to find. As he showed us through the house, I wondered why it was so cheap. It was huge. It had 7 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, and 3 floors. Then, finally, he showed use the third floor. This man was a inventor. He had so many things that I couldn't figure out how he paid for it. Well, we bought the house. Who wouldn't? We found out that no one had died and there was nothing wrong with the house. So after a few weeks we finished up all the unpacking and fixing up the place. That was when we got the phone call from the old man.

Hi, I'm John and here's the first chapter of my journal. When my summer vacation started I thought I was set to roll and life seemed to be going good. I had a lot of friends but we didn't do much. The most exciting thing I'd ever done was cut class to watch the girls gym class. Since I didn't know or do much, I stayed home most of the time. My family, 3 sisters, me, and my brother. I was the oldest son and second oldest in the family. My older sister was 19 and was away at community college. The youngest in our family was Suzie, she was 6. All our ages were pretty spread out. My mom is 54 and my dad is 55. As for me, I'm 17. My life wasn't the best, but it was getting pretty low. My girlfriend lived in a suburb of Chicago, where I live. I called her everynight, unless she called me first, and we'd talk about stupid stuff as all of us teenages do. My mom says that she looks just like Carol, my older sister, but I refused to compare the two. Its been a week since I last saw her and she just called to tell me that she was going away to live with her aunt in California for the summer to babysit her baby cousin. She said she had no choice as I tried to argue and persuade her to stay. Of course, my lame attempts had no effect on her moving so I was pretty much done for the summer.
