Two days later, and everyone on the hill was still talking about the friendly lady in the big pink car. Dolly had seen her but hadn't seen the little girl named Dahlia who was in the back. That was because Dahlia was really little like Marissa. But Dolly was seven and that was only two years older than Marissa's five. Maybe Dahlia would be a fun playmate when Dolly wasn't giving directions to the people who drove here.
It had been heartening to see Sandra in the morning, too. Lately, she hadn't been around much and Dolly heard whispers that her stepfather was being really mean to her. About an hour after Sandra had arrived, her stepfather left to go across the bridge in a car being driven by one of his friends.
Right now, Sandra was talking to someone through the open rear window of a limousine. She laughed and turned back toward the other girls before motioning to Dolly. The redhead trotted up to the big fancy car and was soon whisked away.
"So you're Dolly," Ben said kindly. "I know we're going to have a good time today. Do you like the car?"
Dolly gave the spacious interior another look and nodded appreciatively.
"Good," said Ben. "Because we'll spend all of our time back here. Some advice for you when you get older - a chauffeur with discretion is worth his weight in gold."
He had pointed at the tinted glass partition where the shadowy outline of a man at the wheel sat. Dolly assumed that the man in front was a chauffeur. She didn't know what discretion was, though. Maybe it was candy. If she was rich and had a really neat car like this, she'd want the driver to have lots of candy.
"Why don't you get undressed now, Dolly?" Ben politely requested.
