A brief explanation for those who haven't read other REL stories:
The Replicated Enhanced Lifeform, or REL, is a laboratory grown human used for a variety of tasks - some mundane and other more exotic. Aside from their brains, REL bodies are completely human except for the ability to self-generate (and potentially live forever) and heal rapidly - a desirable thing for a quality product - and other customizable features. Their brains are a mix of cybernetics and human tissue.
About five years after the first RELs came onto the market, a phenomenon occurred in which some RELs were developing personalities beyond their programmed parameters. After a few years of experiencing life and the world around them, they developed likes and dislikes (for anything from food and drink to other people) and other aesthetic features in their behaviors.
The manufacturer had an easy fix - a brain wipe that would erase these uncomfortably human features but retain the basic original programming.
Some RELs have been made as children. Although they might age chronologically, they will always remain their original age in physical, mental, and emotional maturity.
Society has become divided over whether RELs deserve human rights or are simply property. Legally, they are only property and are at the mercy of their owners.
In the darkness of the cavern, the two figures were silhouetted by the emerald glow emanating from the veins of minerals that snaked through the stone walls. The lead figure, a tall and well-proportioned human female paused and held up a hand. The second figure, smaller and slender halted and spoke in a whisper.
"What is it, Shaida?" the follower spoke, the voice light in pitch of one in the lateness of childhood.
"Trolls," the woman replied. "Stay here, Efra, and prepare a glow ball spell in case they charge. That should blind them if we need to retreat. But I want to see what they're doing first if I can - it may give us a clue as to Lord Gorlath's plans."
"Yes, Shaida," Efra replied, taking a moment to stretch her body upward in an attempt to peer over the other's shoulder at what may lie ahead.
Then the pair was suddenly frozen and silent in the room as Russ thumbed the pause button on his game. Setting the control down, he walked over to the holo-projections, ignoring the voluptuous Shaida, star of several action video games. And of course, she also starred in plenty of fan renderings and stories, many of them pornographic.
Russ was a devoted fan of both the former and latter. Ever since his entry into college was delayed when a blood scan revealed the presence of illegal (and worse, untaxed) neuro-narcs in his body, he had time to spend with both the games and the illicit material. His two best buddies, Sean and Brady, were also Shaida fans but their scan had been clean and they were now in their freshman year while Russ had to wait.
