Allie and Brianna became fast friends at a church preschool. Even then, both girls differed from most of the other kids their age in both body and personality. Each girl was small for her age and they were each shy and sensitive. In each other, they found instant comfort from the inadvertent slights of the battleground known as playtime.
When it was time for kindergarten, both families enrolled their daughters into the same private Christian schools and joked how now the girls were even more similar as they dressed in the white blouse, blue plaid skirt, white knee socks, and black shoes that comprised the school uniform.
Both of them had summer birthdays and had turned five shortly before kindergarten began, making them not only the smallest but the youngest in their class. But they were also now proud big sisters as each family had also welcomed a baby girl that same season.
When Allie and Brianna began the fifth grade, members of the staff remarked how the similarities had carried over into the younger siblings, almost eerily so. Robin and Sara shared their big sisters' gentle temperaments and slight bodies and were a pleasure to have in the classroom.
Now sixth grade had begun for the older set. This year, there was a slight change in their wardrobe and now both Robin and Sara had politely asked why they couldn't dress just like their big sisters.
Allie blushed a little as she tried to explain her body's new development to her little sister. As she spoke, she tried in vain to tuck a wavy lock of her light brown hair behind her ear - a nervous habit of hers. Robin watched her intently, even trying to arrange her hair as Allie was doing but her loose curls were even more resistant to it than her sister's.
"When you get my age, you start growing in a different way," Allie explained, gesturing vaguely to the slight swells that had begun to blossom on her chest that summer.
Robin pulled at the collar of her t-shirt, surveying the whiteness of her utterly flat chest where her swimsuit had covered her when she went swimming. Then she looked at Allie's chest where the training bra she coveted was concealed by her sister's shirt. When Allie was in her swimsuit, Robin had seen the small, gentle rises pushing at the front of the fabric. Although the little girl knew it was impolite to see places that should be covered up, she was very curious about the process of becoming a big girl like Allie.
She locked her eyes onto Allie's; the sisters sharing an intense gaze between their dark eyes. Seeing no sign that Allie might be teasing, Robin gave up.
"I just want to be like you," she said softly.
