"Okay. Oh no, thank you. These guys are pretty special and we're glad you'll keep them until they get to a new home. Yeah. Okay, I'll see you in an hour."
Don hung up the phone and turned to Jerry, who was still packing their video gear.
"We're good. I found a private shelter for the dogs. They have limited space and don't put them down. When they place a dog, then they open a space for another one."
Jerry nodded. Despite the nature of their business - which was why they were suddenly packing and moving on after getting a tip that they might have been exposed - they were pretty fond of Mason and Dixon and didn't want to see them put to sleep. But traveling with a pair of black Labrador Retrievers would be more noticeable. Wherever they set up shop again, they would work exclusively with humans until they had trained some new furry stars.
Anne was working on her computer when the bell at the front door jingled. A young girl with shoulder length blonde hair walked in and gave Anne a smile.
"Hi, Miss Benson," the girl said. "We just got back from vacation."
"And you're ready to get to work, I take it? Welcome back, Jessie."
Jessie lived a short bike ride away and loved animals. Anne knew the girl's mother and an arrangement had been made two years ago when Jessie was eight for the girl to assist at the shelter. During that time, Jessie had proven to be quite reliable and had been given more responsibilities.
As she continued working, Anne heard Jessie filling a scoop she used to fill the dogs' supper bowls. Turning, she called back to the girl.
"You'll want to add two large bowls. While you were gone, we got two new arrivals. They're at the end on left."
"Can I open their cage?" Jessie asked.
